What is h5-index?

The h5-index is a bibliometric indicator created by Google Scholar that measures the number of articles published in the last five years that have at least h citations each. The h is the largest number of articles that have each been cited h times. For example, an h5-index of 60 means that a journal has published 60 articles in the past five years that have 60 or more citations each.

You can find the h5-index on scholar.google.com.

The h5-median for a publication is the median number of citations for the articles that make up its h5-index.

Journal Impact in Google Scholar

  • h-index of a publication is the largest number h such that at least h articles in that publication were cited at least h times each. For example, a publication with five articles cited by, respectively, 17, 9, 6, 3, and 2, has the h-index of 3.
  • h-core of a publication is a set of top cited h articles from the publication. These are the articles that the h-index is based on. For example, the publication above has the h-core with three articles, those cited by 17, 9, and 6.
  • h-median of a publication is the median of the citation counts in its h-core. For example, the h-median of the publication above is 9. The h-median is a measure of the distribution of citations to the articles in the h-core.

What are h5-index and h5-median

  • h5-index is the h-index for articles published in the last 5 complete years. For example, h5-index for 2023 is the largest number h such that h articles published in 2018-2022 have at least h citations each.

          For example,

For 2023, h5-index  for Nature of 365 means that 365 articles published in Nature in 2018-2022 have received at least 365 citations each.

  • h5-median for a publication is the median number of citations for the articles that make up its h5-index

Both the H5-index and H5-median are available in Google Scholar Metrics. Journals can be browsed by discipline (more information about disciplines is available in Journal Rankings) or searched by keyword.
